BUENOS AIRES — “Soccer has a god. That god is Argentine, and his name is Diego Armando Maradona,” proclaims the Web site of the Church of Maradona, an online fan club of Argentina’s unrivaled athletic icon that claims some 20,000 members.

Diego Armando Maradona was born in Lanús but was raised in Villa Fiorito a shanty town on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. He has three older sisters and two younger brothers Hugo and Eduardo both of whom were also professional football players.
Maradona was spotted by Los Cebolitas, the junior team of Buenos Aires’ Argentinos Juniors as a youngster aged 10 while playing for his neighbourhood club Estrella Roja . At Argentinos Juniors, he became very popular as a halftime attraction during the team’s league matches where he displayed his football joggling skills. (more…)
